STAYING AWAY FROM Macy was slowly killing him. He’d peeked through the window at the paper and watched her as she worked on her computer. He felt silly, but he couldn’t help it. Before she turned, though, and saw him, he rushed to the front door to go in and leave the flash drive for her. His mother’s advice was to give Macy what she wanted. Time and space.

But he worried each day that the longer they were apart, the easier it would be for her to walk away from what they had.

And they definitely had something. It wasn’t just about her being his. He knew that now. His pride had felt threatened that night, but it was more about him finding the thing that made him whole.

He hadn’t slept much since they’d parted. She calmed him and being in her presence had become a sanctuary of sorts. He hadn’t fully recognized all she’d done for him.

She was the first woman who knew him inside and out, and still accepted him. Wanted him, in fact.

Which was probably why her rejection had felt like a fatal blow.

His mother said it was only a rejection, but it still felt like life ending to him.

After parking his truck behind the feed store, he went straight to the room in back. His mom sat there, reviewing something on the computer.

Taken by complete surprise, he blurted out, “What are you doing here?” Try that again, he told himself. “I mean—”

“Momma D is feeling better, and she insisted I was cramping her style. I came back for a couple of days and then I’ll go down on the weekend to check on her again. You look awful, son.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

His cell rang. He frowned.

“Who is it?”

“Her,” he said.

“Quick, answer it before she hangs up.”

Blake stared at the phone for another second, and pushed Answer. “Hello.”

“Blake.” Macy sounded as if she’d been crying. “I need you to come to the office right away.”

“What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Is it Harley?” He picked up the keys he’d thrown on the desk and turned without so much as a see ya to his mother.

She cleared her throat. “No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to worry you, but this is time sensitive and I really need to see you now if you can make it.”

“I’ll be there in five.”

He was there in four.

Striding in, he bolted straight past the receptionist, who didn’t seem shocked to see him, and into Macy’s office.

She had her head down while petting Harley, who was sprawled out on the floor. When the dog saw him, she jumped up and then ran full force into him knocking him into the chair.

“Harley! Down, girl! Blake, did she hurt you?” Macy went to his side and grabbed the dog by the collar. “Sit, Harley,” she commanded.

Harley obeyed immediately but kept her attention on Blake. He could have sworn she smiled at him, her tongue hanging out of the side of her mouth.

“No, she’s okay. Hey, girl,” he said and affectionately scratched behind her ears.
